Do you want to be a mentor for youth? Although it can be very challenging at times it can also be very rewarding.
Being a mentor for youth is important; especially in this day and age where our youth seem to be getting neglected.
Unfortunately, the way our society is right now; it often requires both parents to work out of the home, therefore leaving the teenagers at home on their own. Teens are not getting as much attention and care as they should be.
This is where the mentors for youth get involved!
In order to be a great mentor there are several factors involved.
Many things will have to be judged as they come along; however there are some guidelines that can be followed.
· Be open and honest at all times.
Do not try to hide things from the youth; they will know you're hiding something and trust you less.
· Learn to communicate effectively.
· Be an active listener.
· Have a sense of humor.
Laugh.
· Be strong and courageous.
· Be open-minded.
· Have the ability to laugh at yourself.
· Be daring; and ask the youth you're mentoring to be daring in return.
· DO NOT care what other people think of you.
As soon as you care what others' think of you; you've lost your edge.
· Be active.
Sometimes the best way to get a youth involved and communicating is to simply distract them with some sort of activity.
· Always remember that youth are NOT children anymore.
They have their own opinions, judgments and can often surprise you with their intelligence.
Treat them as such.
· Always be willing to try new things. You never know what the youth you're mentoring could potentially teach you!
· Always maintain a positive attitude. Regardless of the mood of the youth you're mentoring; it will eventually rub off on him/her if you maintain a great attitude.
Although there will be many times where you won't be sure what to do; and you'll have to judge the situation for yourself, the above guidelines should be helpful.
In any case of mentoring, whether it is adults or teenagers, you're dealing with human beings. Any curve ball could be thrown at you at any time.
Creating a positive, creative environment for youth is essential to mentoring them.
By following the above guidelines and throwing in your own common sense and judgment you will be able to create that environment for them. Being a mentor for youth will be a learning process; but one that is well worth it!

Cooking With Kids - Tips for Success in the Kitchen - Part 3
Now, to the nitty gritty - what tasks can kids safely perform in the kitchen?
Rinsing. Rinsing produce, rinsing beans or fruit from a can etc.
Cutting and chopping. When it comes to knives, I've allowed some (definitely not all) 6th graders to use real knives under my supervision.
Children 3 years old and up may safely use plastic knives from a child's cooking set or sturdy, plastic disposable knives with a rounded point.
Peeling.
I've had Kindergarteners peel cucumbers.
Depending on the quality of the peeler you use, and on the motor skills of the children you work with - peeling soft vegetables and fruit is another task you can plan for for kids to do.
Mixing. Pretty obvious, but this can be a very cool task as there are many ways to mix things up! You can mix with wooden spoons, plastic forks, wire whisk.

Some things require a thorough mixing (for example pudding), while for other things (like muffins or pancakes) over mixing is a no-no.
Tossing a salad is another way of mixing things. And stirring a sauce over heat is also a variation. Have a hand mixer? Fresh whipped cream is so easy to make, and such a fun experience for children to see how the cream turns whipped.
Have a blender? Food processor? Children can take turns measuring ingredients and dumping them in the machine, but usually the coolest thing is pressing the button to blast that kitchen power tool. Mashing.
With a fork - sturdy plastic ones work well also. Two favorite, easy, and healthy dishes that involve mashing: guacamole and baba ghanoush.
Squeezing. Children are excellent at squeezing lemons and limes.
Before slicing the citrus to squeeze, I ask my kids to bruise the lemon/lime by leaning on it, rolling on the table, and even by throwing the fruit on the table - beating it up beforehand makes it easy to thoroughly squeeze.
I've also had kids squeezing the extra water from frozen spinach, using cheese cloth and also using a metal strainer. Rolling, shaping, flattening, filling, brushing, layering.

Planning a Perfect Date
Although certain customs claim the male is supposed to plan a date, we all know that isn't necessarily so.
Dates can be planned by either gender and there are little or no taboos about who pays and who drives anymore. Things are becoming more equal and for good reason.
Safety and independence are two of the major considerations, but enough of that.
Let's talk about planning that perfect date.
Where Sometimes a date location lends itself to you easily.
There is great concert you're dying to make it to or something different like a festival or rodeo is in town. Other times, you're stuck in a planning rut.
What do to, where to go? Be creative.
The coffee shop has been done. Yes, a lot of folks like coffee. Yes, it's nice to talk there. But there are lots of other places to visit and get to know each other that are neutral ground if that's what you're looking for.
Try the zoo. Or perhaps a long (or short) walk through a park or along a beach might give you time to chat.
Pack a picnic basket and find a pretty spot to sit and visit over cheese and wine.
You also don't have to wow anyone with your sophistication.
Remember how much you loved carnivals? You probably still do.
Your date might also get a kick out of them and a carnival or amusement park will have plenty of time for visiting while you stand in line.
Check the paper for something fun and different. Impress your date with your creativity (even if he or she isn't impressed by anything else.
) Who It's entirely possible you're gotten this far in the date planning without ever settling on whom to take.
Perhaps you have a steady significant other or even a spouse. Obviously they are probably your best candidate, or at least your safest choice.
There is no reason you can't be creative about who to take on a date. Be bold and ask the cute guy at work, or try the girl in the apartment next door. Just because you haven't been brave enough to ask before doesn't mean you shouldn't work up the courage now.
Even if you flop, you can always take a buddy with you instead.

A Thought Provoking Quick Goal Setting Exercise
Many years ago, I was fortunate enough to receive my Career Path Counseling training from Career Master, Richard Bolles, author of What Color Is Your Parachute (now in its 40th edition). While the job hunt has changed significantly over the years with technology, Bolles' methods for developing a career path have remained timeless and continues to offer the most successful guidance to identifying the best possible career or work direction of any (and there are hundreds). Today, I am using the same methods to make my own career transition and to help others - there is simply no substitute for taking a soul searching inventory of who we are inside - what's important to us at our core (our true values and preferences) - and what resonates with us in each area of our lives.
A goal is something you want to achieve or accomplish like traveling to another country, or learning a new skill like snowboarding, deep sea diving or taking an art class in a specific medium. Some of your goals may be personal like making X number of friends who share your interests in the next year, getting along with your parents better or becoming a better sibling.
Some goals may be educational like making a decision about where to go to college, taking an AP class to help you get to the college of your dreams, or deciding on a college major that best suits you.
Yes, it can also be about work or career.
However, your life is about you and therefore does not necessarily revolve around school or work.
Your goals can be anything you choose them to be including HAVING FUN.
Here is an exercise that is quick and easy to help you get started.
It is a first step. · Take a piece of paper and place it horizontally and fold it into three equal sections· At the top of the first section write "What I hope to do in my life"· At the top of the second section write "Things I hope to do in the next three to five years."· At the top of the last section write" Things I want or need to do in the next six months.
"· Set a timer, or have someone you know set a timer, and pick any column to write your answers in TWO MINUTES. It doesn't matter which column you choose. Set it again for another two minutes for the next column and the same for the last column.
· Make sure that your answers are free-flowing and the first thing that comes to mind Why only two minutes per question? In two minutes you will find that the most important answers - those that you value - will appear unedited (without forethought as to what you "should" put down).
When I first did this exercise, there was a fourth column entitled "What I should do in the next six months.
" After the exercise was completed we all reviewed our lists and the SHOULD column always had a negative feel to it. So we were told to put a big X through it and disregard it.
But when I looked at that "Should" column, I realized that I had been running much of my life this way instead of recognizing what is really important to me and focusing on those things.
Just know that what you write down, while not set in stone, are things that are truly representative of the real you now.
Over time, you will want to revisit this exercise.

Gifted Children
As someone who was a gifted child, I can definitely write what it is like to be different from everyone else.
I graduated High School - with what was called an Academic Diploma - and entered college - at the age of fifteen.
I definitely did not belong there.
The only reason I was able to get through High School at that age was because I have an older sister.
Her friends accepted me. Otherwise, I had very few friends in my own grade.
I was two to three years younger than any of them.
It did not hurt that I was considered very pretty.
Otherwise I would have been an outsider, a geek with no friends, no one to 'talk' to, no one to socialize with. I probably would have become a High School drop out. Because I was psychic (an unknown term then) people were also a little afraid of me.
I was able to read their thoughts and emotions.
Now combine it all, a psychic who read thoughts and emotions, a highly intelligent person, and someone who was years younger than her grade peers.
Why am I writing all of this? Because more and more children are being born with these abilities and unless the parents and teachers understand what these children feel and are going through, we will have more suicides and more school shootings.
These children need to be understood and helped to understand why they are different and why they have gifts. Yes, these abilities are gifts, and too many feel they are curses instead. Every child wants to be accepted.
It is the nature of the species - to be accepted into a social community.
Every teenager - whether gifted or not - feels different and inferior in some way to every other teenager. Let the reader remember their own teen age years.
Let the reader remember how they felt different and not accepted by others.
Very very few teenagers are in the 'popular' group. Even those that are considered popular have their own insecurities.
I see this in my granddaughter.
She is beautiful, and I am not saying that as her grandmother.
She is popular, but still feels insecure. She doesn't know if people like her for herself, or her looks. She also very sensitive. If someone says something negative to her, she cries and wonders why that person doesn't like her.
Gifted children have friends in their own age group. Once they are accelerated, these friends are left behind and they must find new ones. It is not easy. The more they are accelerated to higher grades, the more difficult to find friends. Boys have it harder than girls do, although girls do not have an easy time of it.
I was lucky in the respect I had good teachers. My teachers cared about their students, all of them. Now, things are a little different.
Teachers are afraid of their students.
I am thinking of one teacher specifically and I sincerely hope she is the exception. This teacher feels some children are born evil.
She also feels any child who commits a crime should go to jail.
If the crime committed is when this child is nine or older, this child should go to adult prison.
Yes, she advocates sending a nine-year-old to adult prison.
Now imagine if this teacher had a gifted student in her class.
The gifted student would automatically be marked different from the rest of the class. Would she be able to help this student find something of interest, or would she automatically consider this student a trouble maker and label as - belongs in jail? Because a child is gifted, the parent usually pushes this child to accelerate more.
The parent expects the child to achieve its potential.
Sometimes, the parent pushes the child too hard.
Each child needs some breathing room and to expect a gifted child to achieve straight 'a' is putting way too much pressure on that child.
A gifted child will not automatically grasp every subject.
It also depends on how the child is taught. My I.
Q. was tested and I had a 168.
This is fairly high. An I Q simply means how that person grasps concepts.
I could not grasp the concept behind chemistry although I did very well in math.
The only reason I am mentioning this is because we all have different subjects we accelerate in. Do not expect a gifted child to be able to accelerate in every subject taught.
I know of one mother who told her girls that math was too hard for girls to understand.
She also told her children that the moon was a planet, but that is beside the point.
Because she kept saying math was too hard for girls, her highly intelligent girls had trouble grasping math.
Tutors did not help them.
Until they understood their problem came because of what their mother had basically drilled into them since early childhood, they had problems with math.
Once they realized where the problem came from, they began to accelerate in it.
Once a child is told they cannot understand something, they automatically will not understand it. Once a child is pushed too hard to accelerate, he (or she) will automatically fail.
Once a child, any child, is neglected or ignored by a parent, that child will rebel against everything and everyone.
Once gifted children are outcast, that insecurity will follow them for their entire life.
Accept our children for whom they are. If they excel in something - great. If they do not, look for the reason behind this failure.
Children are not born stupid.
They just know less than adults do because the adults have been around a lot longer and have learned more. Every child is precious. Every child has a remarkable ability in something.

Technology has changed the way kids and teens grow today.
Too much exposure is somehow alarming for parents. There is no censorship in our technology and anything can be seen through the help of internet.
As young as 9 years old, kids can start chatting, watch the YouTube, and enjoy the whole day playing games because it has been available through internet. Imagine yourself all grown up now shocked at the idea that your kids are now consuming their time and effort chatting with kids their own age, not to mention that these kids are enjoying chatting with the opposite sex. On the other hand, our kids and teens use this technology for their good.
In their education and schooling. The ultimate responsible for the upbringing of kids would be the parents.
Considering kids and teens are minors, the parents have the right to control and censor what they watch and what they do on their spare time.
When kids turn teens, they tend to be consumed in their own ideas and alienate themselves from the family. There are more peer pressure at this age and parents should really be alert and on guard when kids reach this stage. As parents gives more time bonding with the kids and teens, the less you will encounter problems with them.
For as long as there is love and communication within the family, there is no reason why kids and teens will fall back away from the family.
A strong family tie is the the only key to a more happy, more beautiful kids and teens of today.

Parent Powered Schools
At a recent open evening for a high-achieving London prep school, the head was besieged with questions by eager prospective parents. Eventually, he fielded one final question: 'What is the ideal candidate for your school?' 'Orphans,' he replied, without missing a beat.
He was, of course, joking, but even so, parental input into schools is not necessarily the unalloyed force for good it is currently being portrayed in political circles.
'Parent power' is a theme embraced by all political parties, all of whom appear to believe that mums and dads should be allowed to have a go with their own personal slice of the education budget.
The Labour party, the Lib Dems and, of course, the possibly soon-to-be-in-power Tories have all stated that parents should be able to set up schools to complement or, indeed, compete with, existing provision.
'Parents generally know what's best for their children,' said a Conservative Party spokesman.
'We want to give them the freedom to provide it.' It may - or may not - be true that parents know what's best for their own children but, having seen 'parent power' in action, I very much doubt they know what's best for mine. At the London primary school attended by my two sons, parents certainly did their utmost to undermine what I consider a good education.
In Year 6, my oldest boy had an outstanding teacher, the kind of teacher every school is crying out for.
Intelligent and funny, creative and lateral-thinking, he was one of those inspiring individuals who could really engage the minds of ten-year-old boys and girls.
What's more, he could spell and punctuate.
Unfortunately, this particular teacher was not unduly interested in some of the more tedious aspects of the National Curriculum and eventually - after some high-octane intervention by parents - he and the school parted company. In this instance, to use a Key Stage II colloquialism, parent power 'sucked'.
Lest it be forgotten amongst the current 'set 'em free' rhetoric, parents already have considerable power to intervene in the way schools operate. Every state school in the land has 'parent governors', elected by their fellow mums and dads, whose duties, in the words of the government's website, include: 'setting strategic direction, policies and objectives', 'appointing, challenging and supporting the head ' and 'reviewing progress'.
Why, one might reasonably ask, do they need any more power than this, and is it wise to give it to them? Historically, the 'home-school' balance has been a fluctuating one.
In the 19th and early 20th century, parents were kept at a careful distance from the classroom behind safely locked gates. The school knew best and few queried their authority.
In the 1970s, however, there was a dramatic shift in educational philosophy and the parent-teacher relationship mutated into one of 'equal partnership'. The Thatcher years brought further alteration, with the free-market notion that the parent was an educational consumer, a role new Labour has been happy to endorse.
Indeed, it may be argued that this Labour government has became the consumer's champion, acting like Which magazine, with its published league tables and Ofsted inspections to enable the customer to pick this year's 'Best Buys'. Now, yet again, it appears we've seen the dawn of a new age: the parent is to become the employer, appointing heads and setting curricula. It was the Labour government, which under the Education and Inspection Act of 2006, first gave parents the right to set up their own schools. This legislation has not, in fact, led to a flood of parent-founded schools, since the ultimate say so still lies with the local authorities, who remain understandably reluctant to create new school places when there are already existing places going spare.
Only a handful of schools have been completed under this 'Parent-Promoted' scheme: Elmgreen School, a comprehensive in West Norwood; Bolnore Village Primary, a primary in Sussex; and JCoSS, the Jewish Community Secondary School, a VA comprehensive in Barnet, which will welcome its first intake in September 2010.
Marketing consultant Jonathan Fingerhut, a parent and founding member of JCoSS, has certainly not found the process easy: ' It took an unbelievable amount of time, effort and resources. Without access to lawyers, accountants and property people, it's would have been like shifting chairs on the Titanic.
If I'd known what I know now when I started out eight years ago, I'd never have begun.
' The Tories, however, are intending to make the process considerably simpler and intend to free up both funding and planning regulations to enable parents to establish schools which will challenge those run by the local authority.
The argument is that competition from parent-run schools will improve 'standards' all round. 'Local authorities act as a monopoly.

Emmet is also concerned that a parent-led system is 'dangerously susceptible to enthusiasts'. What, he perhaps means is the type of parents I witnessed at my children's primary, who lobbied to exclude those with learning difficulties on the grounds that they were 'lowering standards'.
Or, alternatively, parents like journalist Toby Young, who is currently advertising his attempt to start a school near his West London home where Latin will be 'compulsory for all till the age of 16.

But inundated by whom? The New Schools Network certainly seem to have a full gamut of what I call parents doing the 'playground moan', with gripes about large class sizes and poorly behaved children. What these parents seem completely oblivious to is that this is not a particularly original departure.
Indeed, one might reasonably argue that every parent in the land wants small and disciplined classrooms and this aim is hardly likely to be furthered by splinter-group schools fracturing the per capita funding.
